Podlasie is the most rural and multi-cultural region in Poland. The borderland longstanding traditions of coexistence and merging of cultures make the essence of this land. It has always been an ethnic mosaic of the Poles, Belarussians, Lithuanians, Ukrainians, Russians, Tatars and Jews.
The tour will commence with collecting you from your accommodation in a comfortable car or minivan. First, we will visit Tykocin, a typical old, Jewish shtetl where time stopped in 1700s. The town is proud of having the second largest synagogue in Poland.
In Białystok, the region`s capital, we will visit a palace called „Versailles of the North” and try to learn… esperanto.
Esperanto is the most famous international language, created in late 19th century by Ludwik Zamenhof, who was born and grew in Białystok. UNESCO announced 2017 a Zamenhof Year, commemorating 100th anniversary of his death.
They say one can learn esperanto in three months, it`s that easy. Well, why don`t you check yourself? We can try a bit on the way, it`s great fun!
Podlasie has for ages been inhabited by people of various faiths: the Catholics, Orthodox, Greek-Orthodox, Old Believers, Jewish and Muslim. We will go deep into the country to discover remote, traditional villages that feature old wooden farmsteads, thatched houses, sweep wells, wooden windmills, old roadside crosses and last but least… dozens of beautifully ornated, wooden orthodox churches.
You will also meet Polish Tatars – the oldest Muslim minority in Europe. They have lived here for over 600 years and still continue their customs and traditions – they will show you their villages, old wooden mosques, cemetery. We`ll also have our lunch with them 😊
Believe me, I`m saying this from my experience – this place is the gourmets’ paradise, an inspiration for culinary virtuosos. The food is only local, natural and meals are still made in a traditional way. You will discover a new world of tastes.
Connecting between sites, we will be going through the valley of the Narew River – called the “Polish Amazon”. Having split into many branches long ago, the Narew forms a complex river system, a real aquatic labyrinth. It`s a natural heritage area. The landscape is divine.
